        Obituary--
      "Laura E. Maltby
          Canton, N.Y., Aug. 26, 1833.
     Ashfield, Mass., March 24, 1908.

Laura Emily was the second daughter, third child, of Laura Washburn and Jeremiah Bailey. When only sixteen she married Abiel Barnard of Elizabethtown, N.Y. and by his early death she was soon left a widow with three children. From that time, though always a most welcome inmate of other homes, and always busy and happy in caring for others, she had no home of her own until 1897, when she married Dec. Joseph Holmes Maltby of Ashfield, Mass. Their wedded life of eleven years, terminated by her death, was singularly delightful in their mutual devotion and happiness. Disease finally fastened upon her, so that she suffered greatly, for many months, until death came as a blessed release. Of her is the saying true, that she "entered into rest."

Mrs. Maltby was an earnest and active Congregational church member most of her life. Music was a special endowment which she not only used for her own and other's pleasure but also transmitted to her descendants. Besides Mr. Maltby, she is survived by two children, Charles H. Barnard of Lawrenceville, N.Y., and Mrs. J. Monroe Shepard of South Royalton, Vt., together with several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Three brothers also remain, A. W. Bailey of Denver, Col., Rev. George H. Bailey of Weybridge, Vt., and Henry R. Bailey of Cincinnati, Ohio.

On March 27, Rev. Horace F. Hallett, her pastor, conducted the funeral service at the house, with Scripture readings, prayers and comforting words, including the poem "Sometime" by May Riley Smith. A male quartette sang three hymns "Jesus, Saviour, pilot me"; "On the resurrection morning, and "Goodnight, beloved." The four deacons of the church, of which Mr. Maltby is now honorary deacon, served as bearers, and under a sky both sunny and tearful the friends drove to the puiet resting place to say the final word "until the day break and the shadows flee away."
